The albums presented here are what can be called the "official" studio album catalogue which Gilbert released since 1971.
While under contract with Music Agency Management or MAM, five studio albums and the "Greatest Hits" were released from 1971 through 1977. In 1980 Gilbert returned to CBS [his first label] and released two albums.
The next album, the 1986 "Frobisher Drive" was only released in Germany. In 1990, he released a UK reworking called "In the Key of G," on Dover/Chrysalis Records.
By 1993, the date of his next UK studio effort, numerous compilations, a live CD and a box set had been released in Japan. Since 1992, seven studio albums were released in the Japan
and UK. Some Albums had different graphics, release dates and even remixed or different songs. The US second edition of "Himself" is included because that's the LP that started it all for American fans. The Japanese boxset is also important as it focuses on the MAM years and the first release of the Rhino "Best of" is also essential because it marked the released
of any Gilbert material, in the US, since 1974! "Piano Foreplay", is a departure from Gilbert's pop/rock standard and a foray into the jazz world! His latest offering, "A Scruff At Heart" is yet another departure. Gilbert does away with the typical instruments in favor of
woodwinds and vocal harmonies.
