Gilbert’s heart was broken by Kerry barmaid

Thursday, October 18, 2007

POP star Gilbert O’Sullivan has told how his heart was broken by a Kerry barmaid who shunned his advances after he had fallen for her head over heels.

The veteran singer-songwriter said he first met the young woman when he visited Kerry during his teenage years and he quickly became infatuated with her.

When I was 17 or 18, I fancied this girl who worked in a pub in Killarney. I was besotted," he revealed this week.

But after their first meeting, she wanted nothing to do with the budding pop star from Waterford when he returned to the town on another visit.

She ignored me. But that’s youthful romances for you," said O’Sullivan who has been visiting Kerry since his student days.

The now 60-year-old performer, with a string of hits like Alone Again (Naturally), Matrimony, Get Down and Clair, insists the experience hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm for this part of the country.

And he said the Lakes of Killarney and the local woman who stole his heart as a teenager will always have a special place in his memory bank.

I have really good memories of Kerry," he said.

O’Sullivan returns to the county on Sunday, October 28 for a one-night-only concert at the INEC in Killarney.

Merci beaucoup David!
