Himself was released in August 1971. It entered the UK Album Chart on September 25 and reached Number 5 and stayed on the chart for a total of 86 weeks. No other song was released as a single. However, "Matrimony" gained universal appeal. Gilbert always says: "latin never dates!"
In the Fall of 1971, London Records in US released the American version of Himself which looked like the UK album except that "Doing The Best I Can" was replaced with "We Will". The album and numerous singles were ignored in the States. In the summer of 1972, the album was repackaged. It was no longer a gatefold and the images were updated to the *G* sweater photos. "Featuring Alone Again (Naturally)" was added to cover as the single stormed up the chart to Number one! The new American fans were unware of the deleted "Doing The Best I Can" and "Susan Van Heusen." Sadly, the wonderful original artwork was also lost.
