he albums and singles found on these pages far surpass the "official" catalogue that Gilbert released over the years. Only six albums were issued on the MAM label including one Greatest Hits package. In 1980 Gilbert signed with CBS and released two albums. In 1982, with the pending court case, he moved to Ireland and ceased recording for a few years (but continued to write). In 1986, "Frobisher Drive" was released only in Germany. A few years later most of those tracks turned up on the UK version renamed "In the Key of G."
Thanks in part to Masion Ikkoku, the Japanese animated series in which "Alone Again (Naturally)" was used as the closing theme song; a new Japanese generation discovered Gilbert's music and his popularity grew. For that his fans are truly grateful because Gilbert's entire catalogue has been released in Japan on CD. A beautiful box set of the MAM recordings, with a libretto of lyrics and photos was released in 1990. The set also contains a CD3 single of the non-LP "Alone Again (Naturally)/Save It." Unfortunately, all the Japanese CD booklets are written in the native language. His 1993 Tokyo concert was issued on CD, laser disc and VHS tape. Gilbert has shown his appreciation to his Japanese fans with numerous visits and songs only released in that country.
Singles are an entirely different animal! Following in the Beatles footsteps, Gilbert, for the most part, released singles with non-LP B-Sides. Some of these were added to the Rhino - "Best Of" and the Japanese "Rare Tracks" and "The Other Sides of Gilbert O'Sullivan" collections. Very few remain in the Jersey vault! The singles released in the UK are the "official" singles; there are 22 on MAM, 6 on CBS and 3 on Dover. Obviously, there are more than 31 GOS singles released in the UK, but I did not count the pre-MAM issues, re-releases and the numerous issues of "I Wish I Could Cry/Mr. Moody's Garden."
As early as 1973, there have been numerous compilations and repackages of Gilbert's Music. Two highly sort after by "GOSCollectors" is an Italian LP called "Gilbert O'Sullivan E Le Sue Canzoni" (...and his songs) and "The Humble Beginnings of England's Gilbert O'Sullivan & Gerry Dorsey" released in the USA. Basically, these albums have pre-MAM demo outtakes and non-O'Sullivan album fillers. There have also been numerous instrumental albums and even some songs sung in Italian (by Italian artists). Some of the compilations are very good in design and song selection, others are less desirable. There is also a long list of artists that have recorded an O'Sullivan composition. Gilbert also gave compositions to the Tremeloes and Leapy Lee.
The 1990's saw a returned to recording and performing. In 1995, he was invited to the annual Glastonbury Music Festival and his performance was aired by BBC Radio Two. From 1991 to 2007, Gilbert released seven studio albums which were released in the Japan and UK with different graphics, release dates and sometimes remixed or different tracks. In August 2001, Gilbert released his first CD single on his very own BYGUM RECORDS. In March 2009, Gilbert traveled to Nashville to record new tracks for his new album "Gilbertville" which was released in January , 2011. The idea for the title was prompted by a photograph that was taken in Iowa by Gilbert's brother Terry. Apparently the photograph shows a road sign that points to a town called Raymond, which is Gilbert's real name, and also points to another town called Gilbertville.
The album features 14 tracks with an interlude halfway through which will feature UK comedian Harry Hill reciting a short poem of Gilbert's. Harry previously appeared in the promotional video for "Two's Company (Three Is Allowed)". The 14 tracks are made up of 13 new tracks that were recorded in Nashville and in London and a hidden track called "School Meals" that was recorded during the" A Scruff at Heart " sessions but has been remixed with drums being added to the track.
[To view a particular photo, just click on the title. The picture will change automatically as you move from title to title. You can also move the picture window to any location on your screen and all photos will open in that location. Placing your mouse over a flag, on any page, highlights the country name. Due to the age and condition of the LP covers and singles, many of them have been "spruced-up" in Photoshop to remove ink marks, stains, yellowing and etc. These pages are by NO means finished and I doubt that they ever will. Please use them as a reference tool for your own collection. I know there are some gaps but then again, Gilbert standing behind me as I type is a luxury I could only wish for! That said, your input will be much appreciated!]
