SEVENTIES pop legend Gilbert O'Sullivan has become embroiled in a bizarre spat with TV presenter Jonathan Ross.Gilbert, 57, whose string of hits include Get Down and Clair, is refusing to appear on Ross's popular Radio 2 show because he is still smarting over critical remarks made by Ross, 43, on his BBC film review show.
Wossy made unkind comments about Gilbert's smash 1972 hit Alone Again Naturally, which appeared on the soundtrack of a Sofia Coppola film.
Gilbert says: "I was in bed watching Jonathan Ross's film programme and he was reviewing Virgin Suicides, which features one of my songs Alone Again Naturally along with a lot of others. He capped his review by saying, 'Gilbert O'Sullivan notwithstanding, this is a very good film.' I was absolutely gutted.
"I thought, 'If I was acting or directing, fair criticism - have a go at me'. But it was just my record along with other records, " moans Gilbert - real name Raymond.
"I wasn't in the film. He was reviewing the film, yet he used me as a reason for not liking it.
"The next day I was really down about it and I wrote to the producer saying, 'Come on, if he was criticising me for my music, no problem but he has no right to have a go at me when he's reviewing a film because I have nothing to do with the film.' That hurt."
The sensitive Gilbert - whose greatest hits CD The Berry Vest Of Gilbert O'Sullivan is released next month - is not likely to forgive Ross quickly, it seems.
"EMI want me to go on his radio show but I won't do it of course, " he declares.
How about making Gilbert's new album record of the week to repair the tiff, Jonathan?
